Compare before replacing your battery
Lithium vs tubular battery for an inverter in Nigeria
Compare the backup energy you can actually use, the equipment you already own and the complete upgrade cost. The Ah number on the case is only the beginning.
Here, “lithium” means a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) home-storage battery. “Tubular” means a flooded tubular lead-acid inverter battery. Sealed gel and other lead-acid designs have different maintenance requirements and are outside this comparison.
What should you compare?
On a small screen, swipe the table sideways if needed.
| Question | LiFePO4 option | Flooded tubular option |
|---|---|---|
| How much energy can I use? | Read allowed usable kWh and BMS limits for the exact model | Read capacity at the specified discharge rate and the intended discharge depth |
| What maintenance is involved? | No electrolyte water top-ups; still needs inspections and appropriate operating conditions | Electrolyte-level checks and manufacturer-directed distilled-water maintenance |
| Will it fit my inverter? | Verify voltage range, charge settings, BMS and any communication requirements | Verify bank voltage, charging profile and allowed charge/discharge current |
| How quickly will it charge? | Limited by the battery, charger and available input power | Limited by battery specifications, charger and charge-stage behaviour |
| What does it cost? | Include required inverter, communication or protection changes | Include the complete bank, installation and maintenance provision |
Luminous’s maintenance guidance covers water-level care where applicable and ventilation. Follow the exact product manual; do not treat a generic internet top-up schedule as the manufacturer’s instruction. Have servicing handled appropriately and do not open a sealed lithium battery.
A 200Ah battery and a 100Ah battery can be misleading to compare
Nominal energy in watt-hours is voltage × amp-hours. For an illustrative comparison:
- One 12V, 200Ah battery: 12 × 200 = 2,400Wh.
- One 25.6V, 100Ah battery: 25.6 × 100 = 2,560Wh.
The second has fewer Ah but slightly more nominal energy. These examples have different voltages and are not interchangeable on the same inverter. This is energy arithmetic, not a replacement instruction.
Worked example: the same 200W appliance load
To show the effect of usable capacity, assume 50% usable energy for the tubular example and 80% for the lithium example. Use the same 90% inverter efficiency for both and omit extra idle draw. These are planning inputs, not measured performance or universal discharge limits.
| Calculation | 12V 200Ah tubular example | 25.6V 100Ah lithium example |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal energy | 2,400Wh | 2,560Wh |
| Assumed usable fraction | 50% | 80% |
| Battery energy available | 1,200Wh | 2,048Wh |
| After assumed inverter loss | 1,080Wh | 1,843Wh |
| At a steady 200W | About 5.4 hours | About 9.2 hours |
Formula: nominal Wh × usable fraction × efficiency ÷ appliance watts. The difference here comes mainly from the chosen usable fractions. Actual results depend on the battery and operating conditions; lead-acid discharge-rate effects, idle draw, ageing and changing appliance demand are not modelled.
For a fair quote, ask both suppliers to meet the same energy requirement. Under these assumptions, matching 2,048Wh of usable battery energy at a 50% discharge allowance requires 4,096Wh nominal. That does not specify a safe physical bank arrangement. The installer must design a compatible system.

Cycle life is not a promise of years
A manufacturer’s cycle figure must be read with its discharge depth and remaining-capacity threshold. For example, Victron’s Lithium Smart technical data lists 2,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge and 5,000 at 50%, with capacity at least 80% of nominal. Those figures describe that product range, not every lithium battery sold in Nigeria.
Dividing a cycle claim by 365 does not establish a warranty or guaranteed service life. Ask the seller which operating conditions, calendar limits and exclusions apply. We have not verified a matching tubular cycle specification under identical conditions, so we do not claim a universal “times longer” advantage.
Will lithium recharge faster during a short power window?
Do not assume a chemistry change alone solves slow charging. Request the battery’s allowed charge current, the inverter/charger’s actual capability and the power available from the grid, generator or panels. The smallest relevant limit constrains the system.
As simple arithmetic, replacing 2kWh with a constant 500W arriving at the battery takes at least four hours. That excludes tapering and interruptions. It is not a promised recharge time for either chemistry. Ask an installer to estimate recharge while your household is also using power.
Compare complete cost, not only the battery price
Use our dated Nigerian lithium battery listings as a starting point. For a direct buying decision, obtain current quotes for both options. We have not collected matched tubular and lithium installed offers for this article, so there is no claimed national price gap or payback period.
Put these items on the same comparison sheet:
- Installed cost of the complete battery bank.
- Usable energy allowed under the intended settings and warranty.
- Any inverter, charger, protection or communication changes.
- Documented maintenance and service costs.
- Warranty length, exclusions and the Nigerian party handling claims.
A useful first screen is complete quoted cost ÷ planned usable kWh. This measures upfront storage cost, not lifetime cost per unit of electricity. A lifecycle claim also needs credible assumptions about cycles, ageing, charging losses, repairs and replacements. Do not compare one supplier’s battery-only price with another’s fully installed system.
Can you replace tubular batteries with lithium?
Possibly, but have the exact combination checked before paying. Ask the installer to confirm:
- The inverter supports the proposed battery’s operating voltage range.
- Charging and cutoff settings match the battery manufacturer’s instructions.
- The battery management system can control charging and discharging as required.
- Any communication protocol and firmware combination is supported.
- The battery’s continuous and short-duration discharge limits suit the load.
- Cabling, protection and mounting are suitable for the proposed installation.
A matching “48V” label alone is not a compatibility certificate. Do not combine lithium and tubular batteries into a shared bank as an improvised upgrade. Have a qualified installer design the change.
Which option belongs on your shortlist?
Frequent use with little appetite for water maintenance: compare documented LiFePO4 options, but include compatibility and local after-sales support in the decision.
A limited initial budget and an existing lead-acid system: obtain a tubular replacement quote and a complete lithium-conversion quote for equivalent backup needs. The cheaper battery sticker may not be the cheaper complete change.
Repeatedly running out of charge: first check your appliance energy and recharge opportunity. Neither chemistry can replace energy that never reaches the battery. Our home solar planning worksheet separates load, storage and daily generation.
